smokebox door

Unread postby Allan Kirkpatrick » Fri Jul 08, 2022 5:15 pm

At about 5:40 pm mdt a worker opened the smokebox door while over the ash pit. He took a water hose and did something in the smokebox. He then dogged the door and backed the engines through the house to the other side.
Does anyone know what he was doing?

Allan,
The railroad installed cyclone cinder-catchers in the front end of the coal-burning locomotives to mitigate the fire hazard posed by hot cinders. These catchers are designed to trap cinders in the smoke box, rather than blowing them out the stack. So, if I had to guess, I would say what you saw was them emptying the trapped cinders.

455, aka 463, pulled the regular train into Chama, so I think that was the locomotive being smokebox-cleaned... Edit: oh, I hope I'm not remembering Wednesday afternoon

489 is at the gas station right now...
