Again 463 as well as 484 are active in Chama. 463 is doing some switching in south yard to make up a train which 484 will convey to Antonito. Later 484 is see headed out of Chama with the first east bound train of the season with cars probably destined to be used on the 315 charter freight in June.

Eve of opening day. All 3 K36's in Chama are fired up and prepared for action. The 315 departs Chama on a caboose hop to Antonito for tomorrow's opening day train 215. In the afternoon the Friends crews were working to get the yard ready for opening day. 489 came over from Antonito with a media special consisting of the last 3 cars needed for opening day.

On this Memorial Day 484 takes a 7 car train 216 out of Chama. In the afternoon 488 brings a 9 car train 215 into Chama with the Cresco back in the consist having been picked up at Cumbres.

Train 216 got out in the morning behind 487 with 7 cars. In the afternoon the NARCOA speeders started to arrive in Chama and were parked on the north yard bypass track. Afternoon train 215 arrived with 7 cars behind 484.

Just as morning preparations were getting underway the NARCOA speeders departed Chama on a day trip to Cumbres Pass and back. Train 216 got out of Chama almost right at 10am behind 488 with 7 cars. The speeders returned to Chama about 2:30pm and headed to the wye to turn and park. 487 leads the 215 into Chama with 7 cars.

The railroad crews are working on the engine house lead somewhere out of camera view behind the tipple so we see some different movements of the locomotives. Train 216 had 7 cars today and was lead by the 484. The arrival was not covered secondary to video feed issues at the host ISP.

Train 216 has 7 cars today with 488 providing power. The 488 used the south yard bypass again to get to the tank as it seems the MoW crew is still working on the house lead. Train 215 arrives into Chama with 7 cars behind 484. Just behind train 214, C19 315 comes into Chama with a short freight.

The morning opened with both 484 and 488 getting ready for a double header out of Chama with a 9 car train 216. Train 215 came into Chama in the afternoon with 8 car behind 487. We also saw 488 doing some switching around the house with it moving 15 from in front of the roundhouse to beside it and then moving 489 from in front of the house to the roundhouse. After 487 got back from the wye with the passenger consist, it did some switching in south yard on freight cars which I think had to do with the upcoming fireman/engineer school that begins this coming Sunday.

In doing this something happened at the pit which looked like it caused some concern among the shop crews. Afternoon arrival of 215 was close to time with 487 bringing in 7 cars.

Neither locomotive returned to Chama so both had to end up in Antonito. 463 is slated to pull the geology train next Sunday so maybe going to spend the week there. Afternoon train 215 comes in behind 484 with 7 cars. The first Fireman/Engineer School began today with the students going on familiarization rides on 489.

484 gets the call for the student train and takes it out of town. I had a stream freeze before 216 left so I do not have its departure or the student freight coming back for lunch and leaving again. The student freight got back into Chama about 5:30 local and had time to head to the wye, come back, yard the train and have the hostlers take the 489 to get sand and to the house. Train 215 did not arrive into Chama until 6:30 pm local behind 487. Do not know why the train was over 2 hours late.

All that we have for the day is the prep up to when 463 coupled the 2 extra cars onto train 216 to make a 10 car train for today. There was a failure of the stream and Jason thinks it may be in Chama. The power came back on about 45 minutes before train 215 was due into Chama so we have 484 coming in with a 7 car train.

484 initially came out as the power for 216, but about 40 minutes before train time it pulled to north yard and 487 came out from the house. The train left about 12 minutes late with 487 leading 7 cars. Also caught, on the CDoT cam, the 215 leaving Antonito about 1:15 late. It turned out that the train that I saw on the Antonito cam was not 215 which came into Chama on time with 489 leading. It was a special train which came into Chama sometime around 9pm MDT.

Later 484 returned from Cumbres having gone over to Los Pinos to retrieve the freight cars stored there so they can be used on the student train next week. 215 was also 10 cars today and came in behind 488.

The July Fireman/Engineer School begins today and the students have sat for the safety/rules class and will spend the afternoon getting briefed on the workings of a K36 and they have a chance to run it out a ways on the main and back. Tomorrow they make 2 round trips to Cumbres Pass and Tuesday they go all the way to Antonito and come back Wednesday. 488 comes into Chama with 7 cars on a 50 minutes late 215.

Morning train 216 left Chama with 8 cars behind 487. These is some afternoon switching being done by 463. Train 215 comes in with 8 cars and 488 leading.

There does not seem to be a recording of the departure of train 216 but have the arrival of train 215 which came into Chama with 484 leading 7 cars. Post trip to the wye, the 484 retrieved cars from south yard for the Friend's work session which begins tomorrow as well as a 4th coach for tomorrow's train 216.

484 initially came out as the power for 216, but about 40 minutes before train time it pulled to north yard and 487 came out from the house. The train left about 12 minutes late with 487 leading 7 cars. Also caught, on the CDoT cam, the 215 leaving Antonito about 1:15 late. It turned out that the train that I saw on the Antonito cam was not 215 which came into Chama on time with 489 leading. It was a special train which came into Chama sometime around 9pm MDT.

Train 216 had 10 cars on it this morning with 487 as road locomotive and 484 as helper. There was a stream freeze at my computer 30 minutes before departure so no stills or video of this. Later 484 returned from Cumbres having gone over to Los Pinos to retrieve the freight cars stored there so they can be used on the student train next week. 215 was also 10 cars today and came in behind 488.

Train 216 this day is 7 cars with 487 leading it to Antonito. The July Fireman/Engineer School begins today and the students have sat for the safety/rules class and will spend the afternoon getting briefed on the workings of a K36 and they have a chance to run it out a ways on the main and back. Tomorrow they make 2 round trips to Cumbres Pass and Tuesday they go all the way to Antonito and come back Wednesday. 488 comes into Chama with 7 cars on a 50 minutes late 215.

Train 216 went out this morning with 8 cars behind the 484. At around 3:30 MDT a heavy rain shower hit Chama and resulted in the cam feed going down on all cams so no 215 or Botany train recordings.

8/7/18 Cams remain down and Jason Rose stated that one issue is related to lightening strike which may have damaged part(s) and repair timeframe is unknown at this point. There will be no further posts on this thread unless I need to report an update or the cams are back operating.

We had a second double header in a row this holiday weekend with 488 and 487 taking a 9 car 216 out of Chama. In the afternoon 488, once back from Cumbres, spent several hours switching in south yard building a freight train and actually only finished just before 215 arrived so had to stay in south yard until 215 unloaded and headed to the wye. Train 215 itself was a 9 car train with K36 489 leading.

The day began early with 488 coming out and moving about like it was getting ready for something, got fire cleaned, water and coal, and then it went back to the house. It turned out to be a busy morning in Chama. I think the hostlers got 488 ready and to the south yard lead way early and were told to take it back to the house until it was needed. The road crew for 488 picked it up and moved it to the special freight and waited. 484 came out for regular train 216 and it departed close to the 10am time with 7 cars. The freight pulled forward right behind the 216 but stopped at the tank, taking water and waiting time and finally departed at 10:30 am. Regular train 215 came into Chama behind 487 with 7 cars. The special freight arrived back into Chama close to 90 minutes behind the 215.

Again we had the 2 trains departing Chama this morning with 216 going out first with 7 cars behind 489, then the freight lead by 488 departed. In the afternoon 215 came in behind 484 with 7 cars. The freight returned to Chama about 5:25 pm. After the train was turned on the wye, 488 spent time getting the 315 and its 2 cars out from the depot track so they could get ready to the special train to commemorate the Chili line.

We have 2 trains again today with this being the students last day. 216 went out with 487 and 7 cars while the freight had 2 extra cars today, the RPO and coach which will be used on the Chili Line special are headed to Antonito, though I expect, since the freight is only going as far as Cumbres or Osier, will be left for a later train to take. This should give these advanced students a nice train handling experience with the extra weight going up the hill. Train 215 came in behind 489 with 7 cars and the students were in 2 hours later and after heading to the wye and yarding their train ended their experience.

Currently the tipple cams are not working so probably no video and maybe no stills for the trains until fixed. Morning train 216 went out with 8 cars but no idea which locomotive was pulling. Cams were fixed around noon so we have the arrival video and stills. There is also a sunset dinner train headed up to Cumbres, usually leaves around 5pm MDT, 489 is now getting ready. This morning we really had a treat with a 14 car 'mixed' train 216 depart Chama with 487 and 484. There were 4 freight cars between the 487 and 484. 463 came into Chama with an unusual 11 car train 215.

The 216 was quite the train with 16 cars. Five box cars behind the 484 helper then 11 cars behind 463. There were 7 coaches, café, open gon, tourist and parlor. In the evening a late 215 was also a treat with 13 cars behind 487, 11 passenger cars broken down same as 216 then an additional open gon and caboose on the back. Also in the morning the 315 decked out as DRG 425 went out with the RPO and coach.

For train 216 I have a few stills but the streams froze on me so no departure. The RGS Goose 5 arrived into Chama this afternoon to begin a week long stay so we will see a lot of it. The Goose left for its check ride just as 489 came into Chama with an 8 car 215. The 315 came in about 6:30 pm MDT with an interesting mixed train and the Goose returned later at twilight.

The day began with a strange set of move. The 484 comes out before dawn and goes through the normal prep and couple to 2 cars in the connection track. Moves them around then goes and couples to the train. All of this prior to 8am. The Goose 5 leaves for its Osier turn around 8:30 am and is back in Chama just before 5 pm. Train 216 is 8 cars behind 484. The afternoon 215 has 8 cars and comes in behind 487. After the 215 is in and turned we find the 15 doing some switching in the yard.

Then, using the whole train, they go back into south yard and grab 2 freight cars which are coupled on the rear. Train 216 is now 13 cars long as it leaves Chama. In the afternoon, 215 come in with 11 cars behind 484.

We had a second double header in a row this holiday weekend with 488 and 487 taking a 9 car 216 out of Chama. In the afternoon 488, once back from Cumbres, spent several hours switching in south yard building a freight train and actually only finished just before 215 arrived so had to stay in south yard until 215 unloaded and headed to the wye. Train 215 itself was a 9 car train with K36 489 leading.

The day began early with 488 coming out and moving about like it was getting ready for something, got fire cleaned, water and coal, and then it went back to the house. It turned out to be a busy morning in Chama. I think the hostlers got 488 ready and to the south yard lead way early and were told to take it back to the house until it was needed. The road crew for 488 picked it up and moved it to the special freight and waited. 484 came out for regular train 216 and it departed close to the 10am time with 7 cars. The freight pulled forward right behind the 216 but stopped at the tank, taking water and waiting time and finally departed at 10:30 am. Regular train 215 came into Chama behind 487 with 7 cars. The special freight arrived back into Chama close to 90 minutes behind the 215.

Again we had the 2 trains departing Chama this morning with 216 going out first with 7 cars behind 489, then the freight lead by 488 departed. In the afternoon 215 came in behind 484 with 7 cars. The freight returned to Chama about 5:25 pm. After the train was turned on the wye, 488 spent time getting the 315 and its 2 cars out from the depot track so they could get ready to the special train to commemorate the Chili line.

We have 2 trains again today with this being the students last day. 216 went out with 487 and 7 cars while the freight had 2 extra cars today, the RPO and coach which will be used on the Chili Line special are headed to Antonito, though I expect, since the freight is only going as far as Cumbres or Osier, will be left for a later train to take. This should give these advanced students a nice train handling experience with the extra weight going up the hill. Train 215 came in behind 489 with 7 cars and the students were in 2 hours later and after heading to the wye and yarding their train ended their experience.

Currently the tipple cams are not working so probably no video and maybe no stills for the trains until fixed. Morning train 216 went out with 8 cars but no idea which locomotive was pulling. Cams were fixed around noon so we have the arrival video and stills. There is also a sunset dinner train headed up to Cumbres, usually leaves around 5pm MDT, 489 is now getting ready. Evening 215 came in with 8 cars behind 488. The extra coach was removed after the train was wyed and 489 coupled on and took the sunset train out.

This was a strange and busy day for the beginning of October. The student train was put together and turned out to be a double header with 315 leading 484. Regular train 216 went out behind 489 and had 8 car. In the afternoon, first 484 came back light so the freight that went up must have continued on to Antonito behind the 315, the 484 was coupled to the cars which came in yesterday evening behind 463 and headed out for Cumbres again and the RGS Goose 5 came back from Antonito and tomorrow will head back to its home in Delores, CO. Train 215 came in behind 487 and had 8 cars also. It was almost 8 pm before the student freight finally returned to Chama. Earlier it could be seen sitting at Cumbres on the CDoT cam.

After the train came back from the wye, the 484 and crew did some switching in south yard.

Post season activities: I will post links to any activity that I post about in the regular Web Cam area including the Christmas trains in December. There will not be a daily post link because as the time passes very little will be seen, especially, once they have separated the tenders from the locomotives.

Some movement today, 315 was brought out from the south side of the house and 15 grabbed it and shoved it into the track next to the roundhouse and its now between the 15 and the Friends cook car.

The ballast train continued its run today with 487 headed out with the 2 full hoppers as well as the shortie caboose and rider gon. 484 had it tender removed so that leaves 487 as the only locomotive operational and so it will be the power for the Christmas train. The snow yesterday suspended the ballast operations, but they were back up today. They were doing track somewhere close to Chama because they made 2 round trips and had come in for a third when the stream went down for the scheduled upgrade to the software. Tomorrow should be an off day with them resuming operations Monday.

In the morning 487 and 15 did some moving around of the 489 and 484 locomotive bodies. In the afternoon, 488 comes in from Antonito with the hospital train of passenger cars. It will have the plow that was on 489 installed before it heads back to Antonito with whatever cars need work this winter along with the heritage coach. Don't know it this will be tomorrow or early next week, would guess the deciding factor is how long it takes to put the plow on.

Some movement today, 315 was brought out from the south side of the house and 15 grabbed it and shoved it into the track next to the roundhouse and its now between the 15 and the Friends cook car.

After servicing the 484 and 487, the crews fired up the 15 and did switching in both the swamp and south yard. In the process moved the RPO into south yard and the 2 cars that the Friends had been working on, one went to the swamp and the other to south yard.

The ballast train continued its run today with 487 headed out with the 2 full hoppers as well as the shortie caboose and rider gon. 484 had it tender removed so that leaves 487 as the only locomotive operational and so it will be the power for the Christmas train. We can expect 488 to come back from Antonito sometime with the hospital train.

The snow yesterday suspended the ballast operations, but they were back up today. They were doing track somewhere close to Chama because they made 2 round trips and had come in for a third when the stream went down for the scheduled upgrade to the software. Tomorrow should be an off day with them resuming operations Monday.

Today 487 went out with what is probably a hospital train to Antonito but it was all non passenger cars and included the spreader. We have some still images of the departure but no video due to issues related to that software update last Thursday which now seem to be resolved.
