Restoration of Tourist Sleeper Car 0252/470 - Clerestory: To have an understanding as to the assembly of the clerestory windows it was necessary that a prototype be assembled. The window sits between the screen block on the exterior and a mechanical step latch mounted on each side of the window to the screen block. The latch mechanism has a pin that rides on the arm attached to the window. The pivot point for the window is critical as the window pulls to the inside; it must clear the upper frame to open as well the base pivoting outward must clear the sill. The sill is a rolled seat to a high point on the inside that matches the window preventing water entry. The mechanical latches are original to the car; all are in perfect operating order as well the pull eyes for opening the clerestory windows. Thanks to Craig McMullen for assembling the prototype and to Tom Simco for the pictures.

Wow, Craig sure does nice work. I wonder if these windows would fit in the 292 car in Antonito.

A additional question for Craig is how many Clerestory windows are there in the 0252/470 Car.

Fred, Craig and Maggie are on that fundraiser chartered train for another day or so, and I doubt he will see this to answer until he returns. John Engs might jump in if he sees this and give you an answer.

Fred, there are 28 clerestory windows in the car. Of the 28 there are 4 narrower windows on each side of the ends where the roof arch comes down. All windows can be opened.
