I am a new member of the Friends, although I have been riding the Cumbres & Toltec for about 12 years now. One of my more interesting trips was in June 2013, when there was severe caterpillar infestation. The bugs loved to crawl on the rails. The loco couldn’t gain traction. and kept slipping. It took us hours to get up the grade from Chama. At one point, the crew was walking ahead with brooms sweeping off the tracks. As we neared Cumbres Pass, one or more of the coaches derailed. The train stopped, and the crew were able to get the cars back on the tracks using those rerailers they carry onboard. At that point, the General Manager of the C & T hiked down from Cumbres Pass and apologized to all the passengers. He said that busses would meet us at the pass, and take us back to our point of origin. We got a rain check, which I used the following September.

Anyway, looking forward to my first Photo Freight Charter on Sunday, June 3. See you there !
