Ed Lowrance reports that Friends’ volunteers kicked off Work Session B on Memorial Day (Monday, May 26) at Antonito. Thirty-three volunteers are now focused on tasks at the Friends’ site in Antonito; and 11 are located at the C&TSRR’s Chama Rail Yard. The folks in Antonito are supporting the continued work on restoring Cook Car 053; fabricating and assembling parts for trucks which will underpin historic rail cars; repairing drop bottom and high-sided gondolas; restoring stock car 5995; and painting/lettering recently restored cars. In Chama, the work is focused on the continuing restoration of RPO Car 054 and repairing the Chama Stock Pens at the wye. Support folks include the food service team in Antonito; the tool car volunteers in Chama; and project documentation activities based in Antonito.

Regarding the drop bottom gondola project: John Cole reminded us that his auto shop kids helped build the A frames installed in the gondola and “they will get a kick out of seeing them put to use!” Thanks to our extended young volunteers!

L-R, Tim Bristow, Warren Ringer and C&TSRR CMO Marvin Casias plan the details of converting SG flat car 6314 to temporary use as a rider gondola. The railroad needs the car to be able to easily convert to a flat for equipment transportation. Art Randall led the rebuild of this car some years ago, utilizing glued laminated lumber ("glue lams"); that is STRONG STUFF!
