View of tender from the top. Notice the two metal rods appx 1" in the center. These rods are what carries the tension from the locomotive through the tender. This way the frame avoids undue tension and stress.

End view of the rods. When you ride behind the rebuilt 463, these rods are what carries the pull of the locomotive through the tender to the coupler.

Looks like the correctly figured out that the steps marked "E" belong on the engineer's side of the tender.
