For anyone interested in monitoring the Cumbres and Toltec radio traffic on NXDN;

Icom just announced the new handheld receiver IC-30R at the Tokyo Ham Fest. No prices at yet but it has NXDN

IC-R30 Communications Receiver (Handheld)
The IC-R30 is the successor to the popular IC-R20 compact handheld receiver. The IC-R30 can listen to two signals under certain conditions (analogue + analogue or analogue + digital). The IC-R30 will be able to decode D-STAR, P25, NXDN and dPMR digital (conventional) modes.

Overall a good thing as more railroads go digital and you will need a scanner like this to listen in.

I have a question about these scanners, when I looked up the older model the R20 on ebay, there was one new one for $200+ and a European unrestricted model for about $650+. What is the extra money buying you, and is it worth it?

The R20's probably went down in price because of the announcement of the R30 plus the R20 doesn't have all the digital modes the new R30 has. I believe the European model doesn't have the cell phone 800 and 900 mhz. frequencies blocked.

Someone might correct me on this,

Don

So, I've got a basic question. NXDN is part of ICOM's IDAS system. Kenwood has also implemented the protocol. I have an Icom F3161DT which includes the digital (IDAS) capability. Other than that, do I need any specific key-up codes to listen in? Unfortunately, I didn't have this radio and programming stuff with me on the last trip, so couldn't try it out, but I'd like to be ready for my next journey out there! :-)

Thanks,
...Darryl

I think the code you put in to monitor is 0 (zero) but not sure.

I'm back in Chama and I confirmed that there is not PL or other squelch tones in use.

A radio or scanner that supports NXDN is required.

Frequencies:
Chama end 1: 161.505, 2: 160.305
Antonito end 1: 161.295, 2: 160.485

I have my Icom F3161DT all set and ready to go.. was listening today so I know it works. :-)
